Important Info for USPS Local XChange Buyers & Sellers

Seller Account:

The seller must have a free USPS.com account, and the Smart Locker kiosk must be within 50 miles of their return address.

Buyer Info:

The buyer must provide their name and valid email address to the seller so they can get their Pickup QR Code®1.

Packaging:

Items must be properly packaged in a box or polybag and must fit into the Smart Locker compartment. (The maximum compartment size is 22.5” x 19.5” x 14.5”. Some Smart Locker kiosks will have a lower max size limit.)

Items Not Allowed:

Anything that wouldn't be mailable through the US Postal Service, like mercury or fireworks. See prohibited items for more details. Also, no live animals, alcohol, cremated remains, or hazardous materials other than small, mailable lithium batteries contained in electronic devices.

Timeframe:

Buyers have 5 days to use their Pickup QR Code to get their package from the Smart Locker. After that, it will be removed and held at the counter. Buyers have 10 more days to show acceptable photo ID at the counter during business hours. 15 days after initial notification, the package will be mailed back to the seller.

Access:

Many USPS Smart Locker kiosks are available 24/7. Some are only available during lobby hours.

Local Sellers: Drop Off Items at USPS Smart Lockers

Sell locally without needing in-person handoffs; easily find Smart Lockers and pay with your USPS.com account.

How It Works for Sellers

  1. Complete your transaction, including any payment, with your buyer. Get the buyer's name and email address.
  2. Sign into your USPS.com account, go to Click-N-Ship's "Create a USPS Local XChange™ Label," and find a Smart Locker location (must be within 50 miles of your return address).
  3. Click "Drop Off Here," enter all required info, and pay the $5.10 fee.
  4. Click the “Book a USPS Local XChange” button, sign in with your USPS.com account, confirm your locker location, and enter your buyer's information. A fee of $5.10 will apply.
  5. After you check out, you have 2 options to print your shipping label:

Print at Smart Locker:

  1. Choose "Label Broker (Print at Post Office)" and have the Label Broker QR Code emailed to you.
  2. Take your package and Label Broker QR Code to the USPS Smart Locker.
  3. At the Smart Locker kiosk, scan the Label Broker QR Code. It will print a barcoded shipping label. Put the label on your package.
  4. Choose to drop off the package now or later. If you choose "Now", you'll pick a locker size that fits your package.
  5. A compartment door will open. Place your item inside and close the door.
  6. If you choose "Later": When you're ready to drop off your package, scan the package shipping label's barcode at the Smart Locker, choose a compartment size, put your item in the compartment, and close the door.

Print at Home:

  1. Print the shipping label and affix it to your package.
  2. Take your package to the Smart Locker and scan the package's bar code.
  3. Choose a locker compartment that will fit your package.
  4. The compartment door will open. Place your item in the compartment and close the door.
  1. After you close the door, the recipient will get an email (at the address you provided) with a Pickup QR Code. They can use that Pickup QR Code to get the item from the USPS Smart Locker at their convenience.

Exchange at a Smart Locker

Local Buyers: Pick Up Items at USPS Smart Lockers

When you buy locally and use USPS Local XChange, once a seller drops off your item at the Smart Locker, you'll get an email notification with a Pickup QR Code so you can get it at your convenience.

How It Works for Buyers

  1. Complete your transaction, including any payment, with the seller.
  2. The seller will need your name and valid email address.
  3. Instead of doing an in-person handoff, agree on a USPS Smart Locker location.
  4. The seller will drop off the item in that Smart Locker.
  5. When the item is ready for pickup, you'll get an email with a Pickup QR Code.
  6. Go to the Smart Locker location and scan the Pickup QR Code. A compartment door will open. Get your item.
