Additional Package Fees

Double-check your package measurements and contents: You'll pay additional fees if you're shipping a package that is large and lightweight, has a nonstandard size, shape, or material, or has perishable items. See below for more details.

TIP: Use the USPS Price Calculator tool to calculate your domestic postage costs. You'll need to know your package's weight, shape, and size measurements.

How to Send a Package: Domestic

Expand All

Dimensional Weight

Dimensional (DIM) weight rates apply to large, lightweight packages. If your package is larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches):

  1. Multiply Length x Width x Height and divide by 166 to get the DIM weight in pounds.
  2. If the DIM weight is greater than the actual package weight, you'll need to pay the DIM weight price.

If you omit or give inaccurate dimensions and/or don't pay the DIM weight rate (when it applies), you'll pay a dimension-noncompliance fee.

Nonstandard Fee

You'll pay extra fees for sending nonstandard packages that are harder for USPS to process. Fees vary based on the length, volume, or characteristics:

Nonstandard Length
If your package is between 22 and 30 inches long:

  • USPS Ground Advantage: add $4.00
  • Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail: add $4.00

If your package is more than 30 inches long:

  • USPS Ground Advantage: add $8.40
  • Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail: add $18.00

Nonstandard Characteristics
If your USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail Express, or Priority Mail package meets any of the following characteristics, add $4.00:

  • Cylindrical tube or roll
  • Can, or wooden or metal box
  • Contains more than 24 ounces of liquid in glass containers, or 1 gallon or more of liquid in metal or plastic containers
  • Other mailable items (including polybags) with contents that may shift, or cause the parcel to roll or not maintain the packaging’s integrity during processing

Nonstandard Volume*
If your package is more than 2 cubic feet (3,456 cubic inches):

  • USPS Ground Advantage: add $18.00
  • Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail: add $30.00

*Note: If your package has both nonstandard characteristics and length (for example, a tube that's longer than 30 inches), you'll only pay the higher nonstandard fee, not both. However, the nonstandard volume fee applies in all cases.

Live Animal & Perishable Handling Fee

For USPS Ground Advantage: add $7.50

For Priority Mail: add $15.00

For Priority Mail Express: add $7.50
