  • The Horse is Congenial,
    Hardworking, & Intelligent

The horse is one of twelve animals associated with the Chinese lunar calendar. According to an old legend, the animals raced across a river to determine their order in the cycle. The rat crossed by riding on the back of the ox, jumping ahead at the last minute to win the race. Next came the ox, then the tiger, rabbit, dragon, and snake, followed by the horse in seventh place.

People born in the year of a particular animal are said to share characteristics with that animal. Individuals born during the Year of the Horse are said to be congenial, hardworking, and intelligent.

  • The Art of the Horse

Kam Mak, is an artist who grew up in New York City's Chinatown. For the Year of the Horse, his oil paints on panel depict Chinese drums, traditionally played to usher in the New Year. In addition, to the lucky red drum sticks, Kam decorated these drums with traditional peonies, a symbol of prosperity.

Elements incorporated from the previous series of the Lunar New Year stamps are Clarence Lee's intricate Chinese paper-cut design character for “Horse,” drawn in grass-style calligraphy by Lau Bun.
