Stamps are the story of us, and what a powerful story they each tell. America's greatest people, places and moments are memorialized here, honored in the art and story of commemorative stamps.
Here, Heritage is our Hero®.
Celebrate the bicentennial of writer, philosopher, and naturalist, Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862). Renowned for his book Walden, a complex and eloquent exploration of nature and society, Thoreau asks timeless questions about balancing the material with the spiritual and the practical against the ideal. His other writings about politics and civil disobedience influenced Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., and scientists have praised his observations about nature for anticipating ecology and other sciences.
First day of issue: May 23, 2017 Concord, MA
