  • Rock. Jazz. Soul. Blues. Jimi.

Born in Seattle on November 27, 1942, Johnny Allen Hendrix would later have his name changed to James Marshall Hendrix. An entirely self-taught guitarist, he became one of the most important musicians of the 20th century.

Hendrix combined influences from rock, modern jazz, soul, and the blues with his own innovations, to create a unique style that influenced musical artists of his era and continues to inspire musicians into the 21st century.

First day of issue: March 13, 2014 Austin, TX

The U.S. Postal Service honors him with a Forever® stamp. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail® one-ounce price which is $0.49.

  • Airborne and Itinerant

In 1961, Hendrix enlisted as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne, but did not abandon music, continuing to play and forming a band with some of his Army buddies. After he was discharged, he took up music full time performing at local Nashville clubs and as an itinerant sideman on the famed “chitlin’ circuit,” which provided venues for the appearance of black musicians in segregated American cities.

Hendrix moved to New York in 1964 and found work with such noted R&B artists as Little Richard, Sam Cooke, and the Isley Brothers. Eventually he met Animals bassist Chas Chandler who urged him to relocate to the U.K.

  • The European Experience

Soon after Hendrix arrived in London in 1966, the Jimi Hendrix Experience was formed. Their first single, “Hey Joe,” was an immediate success in the U.K. and Europe. Other single releases such as “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary” confirmed Hendrix’s unique talent and topped sales charts across Europe. The band’s first album, Are You Experienced, reached #2 on the U.K. sales charts, topped only by the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

In 2005, the Library of Congress selected it for permanent preservation in the National Recording Registry, a list of sound recordings that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and reflect life in the United States.”

  • Forever Changing the Sound

Hendrix pushed the boundaries of what a guitar could do, expanding the instrument’s vocabulary in a way that had never been heard before–or since. When he died in London on September 18, 1970 the world was robbed of one of the most creative artists in the history of popular music. Rolling Stone ranked Hendrix #1 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time and in 1993 he was awarded a posthumous Grammy for lifetime achievement.

Part of the Music Icons series, the stamp features art by noted illustrator Rudy Gutierrez who found inspiration in the vibrant, psychedelic pop culture of the 1960s.
