Postal Patchwork
The postal patch and craft tab shift over time.
Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield authorized the first uniform emblem patch in December 1955 featuring the Post Office Department seal of a horse and rider facing right. The patches were maroon with white lettering and were placed on the left sleeves of letter carriers' shirts and coats.

On February 1, 1965, the direction of the horse and rider was flipped to face left, and the center background was changed to blue. Concurrently, a crescent-shaped maroon tab embroidered in white with the words "LETTER CARRIER" was added directly above the emblem patch.

The eagle seal was adopted on August 12, 1970, upon the signing of the Postal Reorganization Act. When the emblem patch was redesigned in 1970, the craft tab (denoting the employee's position) was also changed, and was moved to the left breast. On parkas and rainwear, the emblem patch was also placed over the left breast.

In 1991, the patch was redesigned to feature a blue eagle facing right atop a red bar, over the trademark "U.S. MAIL," and was placed over the left breast.

In February 1992, the craft tab was redesigned. The words "LETTER CARRIER" were embroidered in white on a navy blue background, and the patch was placed over the right breast.

In 1995, emblem patches first incorporated the "sonic eagle" logo, and the background shade of blue on the craft tab changed to coordinate with the new emblem patch.
