One of the most visible representatives of the Postal Service™ is the local letter carrier. As a result, postal uniforms and accessories are a vital part of the history of the Postal Service.

|
While mail delivery in large cities began in 1863, no official uniforms were worn until after July 27, 1868, when Congress passed legislation authorizing use of uniforms by letter carriers.
