The letter carrier uniform evolves through history.
One of the most visible representatives of the Postal Serviceā„¢ is the local letter carrier. As a result, postal uniforms and accessories are a vital part of the history of the Postal Service.

While mail delivery in large cities began in 1863, no official uniforms were worn until after July 27, 1868, when Congress passed legislation authorizing use of uniforms by letter carriers.
