COMPETITION HEATS UP. The Wall Street Journal reports that UPS is chopping at least a day from the amount of time it takes to ship items by ground between more than half the country's 50 biggest metropolitan areas. The article said UPS expects the faster deliveries will help the company maintain its dominance in ground shipments against competitors FedEx Ground, USPS and Deutsche Post.
CARRIERS ATTACKED IN NEWARK. NJ.com reports that since April, at least 10 mail carriers from the Springfield Avenue Post Office have faced physical violence or threats of bodily harm, an unusual amount even for a large Post Office in an urban area, according to Postal Inspectors. The article said many of the problems are attributed to gangs and drug activity. The article said there is a plan to equip letter carriers with cell phones. And mailboxes in problem buildings may be moved outside. "We will not tolerate carriers being assaulted or threatened by anyone," Postal Inspector Tony Esposito is quoted as saying.
CARRIER GOES EXTRA MILE. The Southern Illinoisan says the news media often neglects good news stories, and mentions Rural Letter Carrier Lesley Nelson, who found a customer's cell phone, contacted the customer and then offered to deliver the phone to his house. "Too many of us take good service for granted. I'm lucky. My mail carrier seems to be a good one. Trouble is, I haven't taken the time to say, 'Thank you,'" the customer said.
CUSTOMIZED STAMPS IN JAPAN.CNN reports that Japan Post will turn customer snapshots into customized stamps. The article said the photos take about three weeks to process and cost 1,000 yen ($9.00) per sheet of 10 stamps, according to an official at the Communications Museum in Tokyo, run by Japan Post.
