DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND COMMUNICATIONS USPS NEWS Today
Monday | December 16, 2002
Quotable Quotes . . . "We applaud the President's proactive leadership in creating the commission to examine the current state of the U.S. Postal Service and its role in the 21st century. This is exactly what the doctor ordered ... The commission will have a unique opportunity to reevaluate the needs of the American people in a modern communications environment and how best to meet those needs. Both the President and commission members should be commended for their willingness to take on this politically thorny yet essential task."
Rick Merritt, executive director, PostalWatch, Dec. 12, 2002
BRENTWOOD UPDATE. Fumigation of the processing and distribution facility located on Brentwood Road in Northeast Washington occurred without incident. The fumigation, which began Saturday, consisted of filling the building with chlorine dioxide to rid the building of anthrax spores. The facility reached maximum concentration of the chlorine dioxide chemicals at 7:07 p.m. Saturday night several hours ahead of schedule.
"We are extremely pleased with the results of this process. It represents a tremendous effort among all parties involved," said Engineering Vice President Tom Day. "The successful decontamination process could not have been realized without the joint cooperation we've had with the other agencies.'"
The next step includes activating a scrubber system to neutralize the chlorine dioxide into a salt water solution. This process began Sunday and is expected to be completed today. The Brentwood Road facility has been renamed in memory of Joseph Curseen, Jr. & Thomas Morris, Jr. two postal employees who died after two letters containing anthrax passed through the facility. The facility has been closed since October 2001.
TODAY'S THE DAY. This year's busiest mailing day is projected to be Monday, Dec. 16 (that's today), with 850 million of pieces of mail entering the system.
MILITARY MAIL. USPS reminds customers that the Department of Defense (DOD) suspended indefinitely the program allowing mail addressed to "Any Service Member" since October 2001 due to security concerns. While USPS and DOD recognize the value of supporting military personnel overseas especially during the holidays mail without specific address information cannot be accepted due to the risk of mail in the military system from sources unknown to the recipients.
