TWO CEREMONIES, TWO EMPLOYEE ARTISTS. USPS officials and community leaders unveiled a special Sept. 11 stained glass memorial Monday at the Staten Island, NY, Post Office. The memorial created by USPS employee John Martin consists of eight 2X3 stained glass panels that pay tribute to the victims and heroes of the last year's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers. One panel features the Heroes of 2001 stamp.
The stained glass memorial will be on permanent display in the front window of the Staten Island Post Office. Martin, a customer service supervisor at Mariners Harbor Station, NY, has been a stained glass artist for 25 years.
On Tuesday, a Sept. 11 commemorative mural painted by nixie clerk Patty Lane was unveiled at the Western Nassau, NY, Processing and Distribution Center. The mural 9 feet high by 14 feet wide also features the Heroes of 2001 stamp. The painting will be displayed at the employee entrance to the building.
Both works of art were well-received by the local community and USPS employees.
TRANSFORMATION EXCERPT. "Today, a commercially and financially viable Postal Service remains vital to the American economy. The Postal Service anchors a $900 billion domestic mailing industry that employs roughly one in 15 American workers. The Postal Service employs 750,000 career employees, which makes it the second largest civilian employer in the nation. More than seven million Americans visit post offices each day.
