Quotable Quotes . . . "It's not too late to give a belated thanks to all your clerks and carriers for their service and dedication. National Postal Worker Day was July 1 ... In my view, there is no better bargain around than paying only 37 cents to send a message across the continent."
    — Marguerite Whitley May, columnist, Tri-Town Transcript, Boxford, MA, July 11, 2002.

Marshall was one of the best-known civil rights lawyers in America, and was the first African-American justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 37-cent commemorative stamp will be issued in January 2003 as part of the Black Heritage series, the longest-running annual series of U.S. commemorative postage stamps. In addition to his historic appointment to the Supreme Court, Marshall was also the first African-American solicitor general of the United States, and was part of the legal team that prevailed in the landmark 1954 case, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, KS, that struck down segregation in public schools.

USPS conducted a limited test at the Washington, DC, Processing and Distribution Center at Brentwood Monday to evaluate the capability of the systems that will be used to decontaminate the facility. The test went smoothly and measured the ability of the delivery system to sustain the required levels of chlorine dioxide gas, temperature and humidity. Three automated processing machines used to sort mail were tested in a tightly sealed, tent-like structure within the facility.

USPS continues to work closely with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the White House Office of Science and Technology, the DC Department of Health and the DC Emergency Management Agency on the project. A multi-agency group that includes USPS is operating a Joint Information Center at the Brentwood site to help keep employees and community members updated throughout the process.

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE. The Atlanta Performance Cluster will host its first Leadership Development Conference for Women Aug. 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Speakers will include USPS Diversity Development VP Ben Ocasio and former CNN VP Gail Evans.

The 62.5-mile course for the New York City Cycling Championships begins and ends at Wall and Water Streets, a few blocks south of South Street Seaport. Festivities kick off at 9 a.m., with the race beginning at 1 p.m. The event will raise money for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The bike race is free and open to the public. The race will be one of six official events nationwide on the 2002 Pro Cycling Tour. You can read all about the events, the team and the Tour de France victory at www.uspsprocycling.com.
