BRENTWOOD UPDATE. USPS conducted a limited test at the Washington, DC, Processing and Distribution Center at Brentwood Monday to evaluate the capability of the systems that will be used to decontaminate the facility. Three automated processing machines used to sort mail were tested in a tightly sealed, tent-like structure within the facility.
USPS continues to work closely with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the White House Office of Science and Technology, the DC Department of Health and the DC Emergency Management Agency on the project. A multi-agency group that includes USPS is operating a Joint Information Center at the Brentwood site to help keep employees and community members updated throughout the process.
LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE. The Atlanta Performance Cluster will host its first Leadership Development Conference for Women Aug. 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Speakers will include USPS Diversity Development VP Ben Ocasio and former CNN VP Gail Evans.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS AGENDA. The USPS Board of Governors will hold its monthly meeting in Washington, DC, Aug. 5-6. While the Monday meeting is a closed session, the public is welcome to observe Tuesday's meeting, scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Ben Franklin Room on the 11th floor in USPS Headquarters at L'Enfant Plaza. TOUR ENDS, CELEBRATION BEGINS. Lance Armstrong captured his fourth Tour de France victory Sunday, becoming the first American and only the fifth man ever to win four times. Lance was highly complimentary of the invaluable assistance he received from his USPS Pro Cycling Team members, saying, "I don't know how a team could be stronger."

U.S. fans can see Armstrong in the Tour de New York Sunday, Aug. 4, in New York City. The 62.5-mile course begins and ends at Wall and Water Streets, a few blocks south of South Street Seaport. Festivities kick off at 9 a.m., with the race beginning at 1 p.m. The event will raise money for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
The bike race is free and open to the public. The race will be one of six official events nationwide on the 2002 Pro Cycling Tour. You can read all about the events, the team and the Tour de France victory at http://www.uspsprocycling.com/.
MORE AWARDS. USPS captured four awards for The United States Postal Service 2001 Annual Report at the 16th Annual International Arc Awards. The competition included more than 1,600 annual reports from around the world. USPS received a gold award for excellence in writing, silver for financial data, bronze for best annual report overall, and the first presentation of a special "American Pride" award described as "a tribute to the tragedy and triumph of the American sprit" in response to the events of Sept. 11.
