Quotable Quotes . . . "This past year, we made great strides in transforming the Postal Service while maintaining our focus. Service is at all-time highs. Productivity is up ... Despite productivity gains, we have had to raise rates ... No question, those rate increases have hurt growth ... Despite stiff competition and a changing marketplace, we are working hard to encourage growth."
   — PMG Jack Potter, Presidential Commission on the USPS, Jan. 8, 2003

SAY GOODBYE. A number of popular and innovative U.S. stamp issues are being removed from sale after March 31. That will be the last date to buy the items through USA Philatelic, the catalog of U.S. stamps, stationery and related products. Items going off sale include the 34-cent Greetings From America pane of 50 stamps, all the Looney Tunes stamps and related products, and the individual souvenir sheets from the Space Achievement and Exploration sheet issued in July 2000.

The Greetings From America stamps were so popular that they were re-issued at the current 37-cent rate last year. The 37-cent version will remain on sale. To order, call 800-STAMP-24. If paying by other than credit card, request the USA Philatelic catalog from 800-STAMP-24 or online at www.usps.com.

POSTMASTER PRAISED. Markleeville, CA Postmaster Margaret Daniels was recognized for her outstanding public service efforts during the recent power outages that swept across parts of California and Nevada. "Although the majority of residences and businesses were without power for five consecutive days, Postmaster Daniels worked diligently to ensure that the post office was accessible and operational," wrote a local official.

EXECUTIVE JOINS BOARD. Zoe Strickland, chief privacy officer for USPS, has been named to the board of directors of the International Association of Privacy Officers (IAPO), the largest group of its kind. J. Trevor Hughes, IAPO executive director, describes Strickland's selection as "a significant vote of confidence" representing "respect from your peers in the industry."

ANOTHER HONOR. USPS VP and General Counsel Mary Anne Gibbons was one of three Washington, DC, residents honored by the Catholic University of America Alumni Association for outstanding accomplishments. Gibbons was praised for her coordination of the USPS legal response to the anthrax crisis since September 2001, and for her work in the legal field and with the courts.
