Scrubber System Test to Begin at Washington, D.C. Processing & Distribution Center
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The United States Postal Service will begin the final system test at the Washington, D.C. Processing & Distribution Center (Brentwood) on Tuesday, September 17, in anticipation of the full fumigation of the Brentwood facility.
The test will be performed on the Scrubber System to insure its efficiency in removing the Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) from the building via the air vent system, following the full fumigation. The scrubber test will take approximately 24 hours during which Chlorine Dioxide gas will be continuously pumped through the system at rates and concentrations that simulate the expected conditions for the final fumigation. A limited quantity of Chlorine Dioxide will be generated and immediately consumed by the scrubbing system during the test. Air monitoring equipment will be positioned in close proximity to the air vent system. The Environmental Protection Agency's TAGA (Trace Atmospheric Gas Analyzer) Bus will be onsite during the test to perform additional air monitoring.
A report will be issued and incorporated into the Postal Service's Remedial Action Plan (RAP), which will be submitted to EPA.
