Postal News FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 15, 2002 Contact: (202) 268-2155 Release No. 02-098 Postal Service Declares Fumigation Process A Success WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Postal Service today announced that the fumigation of the processing and distribution facility located on Brentwood Road in Northeast Washington was a total success. The fumigation, which began yesterday, consisted of filling the building with chlorine dioxide to rid the building of anthrax spores. The facility reached maximum concentration of the chlorine dioxide chemicals at 7:07 p.m. last night, several hours earlier than anticipated. "We are extremely pleased with the results of this process. It represents a tremendous effort between all parties involved," said Thomas G. Day, vice president, engineering. "The successful decontamination process could not have been realized without the joint cooperation we've had with the other agencies.'" The next step in this process includes activating a scrubber system to neutralize the chlorine dioxide into a salt water solution. This process began this morning and is expected to be completed by some point tomorrow. After that, the building will begin a dehumidification process to return the humidity levels to normal. The facility, renamed the Joseph Curseen, Jr. & Thomas Morris, Jr. after two postal employees died there last October, has been closed since that time. ###
