FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec. 21, 2001

Statement of Azeezaly S. Jaffer,
Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications,
U.S. Postal Service,
On Precautionary Medical Treatment Options
For Postal Service Employees

This afternoon, the U.S. Postal Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began an education program that will provide Postal Service employees with information on precautionary medical treatment options available to them.

The Centers for Disease control did a one-hour satellite television broadcast that answered common questions regarding the medication and vaccination options that have been endorsed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. That broadcast was made available live to employees at several postal facilities and will be replayed on videotape for others.

The CDC has dispatched two physicians to Washington, D.C. to begin conducting informational briefings for employees who worked at the Brentwood Processing and Distribution Center when it was contaminated in October. The doctors will brief employees at two postal facilities in Washington and suburban Maryland beginning with the 3 a.m. shift Saturday. The briefings will be delivered to groups of about 15 employees each and will last about 45 minutes.

Beginning Dec. 27, the CDC will provide doctors to conduct similar briefings for employees who worked at the Trenton Processing and Distribution Center in Hamilton Township.

The Postal Service and the CDC are working to finalize details for administering antibiotics or vaccinations to employees who seek them. The CDC will not begin administering additional medication to employees before Dec. 27.
