FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec. 20, 2001
Statement of Azeezaly S. Jaffer,
Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications,
U.S. Postal Service
On Precautionary Medication and Vaccination Options
For Postal Service Employees
Presented by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Officials of the U.S. Postal Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had a productive meeting today regarding implementation of precautionary medication and vaccination options presented Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
After conferring with Postal Service officials and representatives of postal employee unions, CDC officials are preparing materials that detail how antibiotics or vaccinations would be made available to Postal Service employees who seek them. They are also dispatching CDC employees to two postal facilities -- Brentwood Processing and Distribution Center in Washington, D.C. and Trenton Processing and Distribution Center in Hamilton Township, N.J. -- to discuss treatment options with employees who might seek them. Those CDC employees could be on site at Postal Service facilities as early as this evening or tomorrow morning.
The CDC and the Postal Service are currently working together to provide additional precautionary medication and vaccinations to any employees who might seek them as early as December 27.
