USPS News: Press Releases
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 11, 2001

Statement from John E. Potter Postmaster General/CEO of the United States Postal Service

This is an extremely sad day for our nation and I offer my heartfelt prayers for the individuals and families who have been affected by today's tragic events.

I am greatly relieved that we have received no reports of any injuries to Postal Service employees. The Postal Service has a strong presence throughout the nation. We recognize that many of our employees have been touched in some way by the sad events that occurred this morning. We are taking actions to accommodate their personal needs, including making counseling services available, as necessary, during this difficult time.

The safety and security of Postal Service employees, wherever they may be, is our primary concern. Postal managers throughout the nation are doing everything possible to protect our employees and secure the mail. In addition, as local public safety officials take steps to enhance the security of their communities, the Postal service will continue to support them fully.

I have been touched by the many stories of how our employees have reached out to those in need. As always, postal employees will rally to serve those affected by these tragedies and continue to bind our nation together.
