Postal Service Awards 10-year Tire Contract To Goodyear

Washington, DC – The U.S. Postal Service today awarded a contract to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company to supply all of the federal agency's tire needs for the next 10 years.

Under the agreement, the Postal Service is expected to purchase approximately 235,000 Goodyear tires each year to outfit its fleet of more than 200,000 trucks, vans, and delivery vehicles. The nationwide fleet of Postal Service vehicles travels a combined total of more than 1.1 billion miles annually.

"Working with Goodyear, this contract will allow us to identify and manage the long-term costs associated with keeping our postal fleet rolling," said Keith Strange, Vice President of Purchasing and Materials for the U.S. Postal Service.

"Whenever the public and private sectors work together, the real beneficiary is the American public," said Strange. "This will enable us to provide all Americans with continued high levels of service in a cost-efficient manner."

Goodyear—the largest tire maker in America—is one of three tire manufacturers currently providing tires for the Postal Service. Goodyear becomes the exclusive supplier of tires for the Postal Service when those contracts expire at the end of September 2001.
