Postal Service Honors Nine Outstanding Companies with "2001 Quality Supplier Awards"

WASHINGTON — Postmaster General William J. Henderson today recognized nine companies that are considered "the best of the best" when it comes to supplying employees of the United States Postal Service with the equipment, tools and material they need to maintain their commitment as the gateway to the American household. The awards were presented during an afternoon ceremony at Postal Service headquarters.

Keith Strange, vice president of Purchasing and Materials, noted that to be eligible for this Quality Supplier Award, all of the firms must have earned more than $500,000 during the last fiscal year. The nominees then went through a rigorous seven-step evaluation process in order to make the final cut. Mirroring the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award process, a small team of postal evaluators selected the winners by reviewing each application, making an on-site visit with the firm and its employees, and talking to key Postal Service customers and purchasing individuals familiar with the supplier.

"The winning companies clearly demonstrated to the postal review teams their desire to exceed expectations," said Strange. "These vendors have systems in place that consistently provide our organization with high quality services and materials. It's a consistency we experience each and every day we work together."

Purchasing supplies and materials is no small task. In fiscal year 2000, the Postal Service awarded more than 55,000 contracts exceeding $7.5 billion. Out of those 55,000 contracts, nine firms were selected as Quality Supplier Award winners.
