FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 17, 2001 Stamp Release No. 01-072 POSTMASTER GENERAL ORDERS EARLY RELEASE OF 'UNITED WE STAND' POSTAGE STAMP
Available Oct. 24 in New York, New Jersey, D.C. and Pennsylvania WASHINGTON - Postmaster General and CEO John E. Potter today announced the U.S. Postal Service will make the United We Stand postage stamp available starting Oct. 24 at post offices in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, in the states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and by online and telephone orders.The United We Stand stamp will be available at post offices nationwide beginning Nov. 5. However, preorders of coils of 100 stamps are now being taken online through the Postal Store at www.usps.com. Preorders will end on Oct. 24 when all customers can order the stamp online at www.usps.com and via the Postal Service's toll-free telephone number at 1 800 STAMP-24. "The United We Stand stamp has struck a chord with the American people and we are committed to making this special stamp available to everyone as soon as possible," said Potter. "By Oct. 24 we will have sufficient quantities available to begin limited sales, and by Nov. 5, enough stamps will be printed that we can stock all post offices." Designed by Terry McCaffrey, manager, Stamp Development, the self-adhesive, 34-cent stamp features "Old Glory" with the words "United We Stand" below it. The stamp will be available in booklets of 20 stamps and coils of 100. "Keeping the mail moving is the most important thing the Postal Service can do as our nation moves forward in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and this stamp is a reminder of our commitment to the American people and the spirit of unity we all share," said Potter. "Not only is the mail one of the cornerstones of our economy, but the sight of letter carriers making their daily rounds delivers a reassuring message to people in every neighborhood in America that the fabric of everyday life, although damaged, remains intact," he added. Current U.S. stamps, as well as a free comprehensive catalog, are available toll free by calling 1 800 STAMP-24. In addition, a selection of stamps and other philatelic items are available in the Postal Store at www.usps.com. They may purchase new stamps by telephone at 1 800 STAMP-24, the Postal Store Web site at www.usps.com, and mail order through Stamp Fulfillment Services. They should affix the stamps to envelopes of their choice, address the envelopes (to themselves or others), and place them in a larger envelope addressed to: UNITED WE STAND STAMP POSTMASTER 900 BRENTWOOD RD NE WASHINGTON DC 20066-9991 After applying the first day of issue postmark, the Postal Service will return the envelopes through the mail. There is no charge for the postmark.
