U.S. Postal Service Unveiled 'United We Stand' Postage Stamp

The 34-Cent 'United We Stand' Stamp - Click To EnlargeWASHINGTON — One of the most recognized symbols of freedom in the world, the United States flag, graces a definitive postage stamp unveiled by the Board of Governors and Postmaster General John E. Potter at a 10:30 a.m. ceremony outside Post Office headquarters today in Washington, D.C.

The 34-cent self-adhesive stamp features a stirring image of "Old Glory" with the words 'United We Stand' below it. A fitting tribute to the invigorated patriotic spirit of our nation, the stamp will be available nationwide following a First Day of Issue Ceremony to take place later this year. "It is fitting that the U.S. Postal Service - which has served the people of this nation since the dawn of our republic - is planning to issue the 'United We Stand' postage stamp. For our primary job has always been 'to bind the nation together'," said Robert F. Rider, Chairman, of the presidentially appointed Postal Service Board of Governors. "Today, more than ever, the people of America are united in their purpose, their pride, and their determination. This postage stamp is graphic representation of that unity."

Unveiling ceremony outside Post Office headquarters today in Washington, D.C. "The employees of the United States Postal Service are deeply saddened by the tragic events of September 11. Our thoughts are with all of those who are suffering and we extend our deepest appreciation to all volunteers, including postal employees who assisted on the rescue teams," says Potter. "I am extremely proud of how our 800,000 men and women pulled together to keep the Postal Service and the mail moving."

Potter further said, "Keeping the mail moving was the most important thing the Postal Service could do as our nation worked toward recovery. Not only is the mail one of the lynchpins of our economy, but the sight of letter carriers making their daily rounds delivered a reassuring message to people in every neighborhood in America - the fabric of everyday life, although damaged, remain intact."

With this postage stamp, the power of the mail will sustain the tremendous spirit and resolve demonstrated by the American people.
