Postmaster General Appoints Sylvia Harris To Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee

WASHINGTON – Postmaster General John (Jack) E. Potter today announced the appointment of noted graphic designer Sylvia Harris as the newest member of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC).

"Sylvia Harris' creativity and talent for graphic design promises to enhance the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee's ability to boldly communicate America's cultural diversity through the U.S. commemorative stamp program," said Potter.

Harris specializes in planning user-friendly communications for large public audiences. Through this expertise, she helps institutions find new ways to present their cultural resources, information and instructions to diverse American communities.

In 1980 Harris co-founded Two Twelve Associates, Inc., a New York City graphic design firm. A principal of the firm from its founding until 1993, she was responsible for business development and for managing design projects that delivered complex information to a broad spectrum of the general public.

A member of the 1992 Presidential Round Table on Design Initiatives Toward a Competitive and Inclusive America, Harris co-authored the subsequent report, "America by Design." She has traveled extensively worldwide and writes on culture and "design for diversity."

Harris is currently advising the General Services Administration on the design of the African Burial Ground Interpretive Center in New York. She is also a design critic at the Yale University School of Art, where she teaches graduate-level courses in graphic design.

Established in 1957, the CSAC is tasked with reviewing more than 50,000 stamp subject proposals annually received by the Postal Service and is responsible for making subject and design recommendations to the Postmaster General.

CSAC members are appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the Postmaster General. The CSAC is currently composed of 12 members whose backgrounds reflect a wide range of educational, artistic, historical and professional expertise. All share an interest in philately and fulfilling the needs of the mailing public.
