Postal Service to Issue Postal Card Celebrating Northwestern University's Sesquicentennial

Northwestern University stamped postal cardWASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service will help Northwestern University commemorate the 150th anniversary of the university's founding when a new stamped postal card is issued April 28 in Evanston, Ill.

The official first day of issue ceremony for the Northwestern University stamped postal card will take place at 3:15 p.m. in the Norris Center at 1999 Campus Drive on the university campus.

"The Postal Service is proud to participate in Northwestern University's sesquicentennial celebration," said Einar V. Dyhrkopp, member of the presidentially appointed Postal Service Board of Governors, who will be the dedicating official.

"Northwestern joins other notable institutions whose beautiful architecture and dedication to higher learning have been commemorated in the Historic Preservation series," he said.

The Northwestern University stamped postal card is the 53rd in the series. It will be available April 28 at the ceremony and at Evanston post offices. Starting April 30, the stamped postal card will be available at other Illinois post offices and at Postal Stores and Philatelic Centers across the country.

Founded in 1851 as a small liberal arts college, Northwestern has evolved into one of the nation's leading private research and teaching institutions with some 17,500 full-time and part-time students, enrolled in 12 colleges and schools on two lakefront campuses in Evanston and Chicago. It has a full-time faculty of 2,100.

The 20-cent stamped postal card features a depiction of the tower of University Hall, which was completed in 1869 and is the oldest building on campus. Arnold C. Holeywell, of Warrenton, Va., illustrated the card, and Howard Paine, of Delaplane, Va., was the art director.

For a schedule of Northwestern University Sesquicentennial events, visit the university's Web site at www.nu150.northwestern.edu.
