2007 NATIONAL POSTAL FORUM:

DELIVERING ON THE BUSINESS OF MAIL

When your thoughts turn to spring, think National Postal Forum.

The 2007 NPF will be held March 25-28 in Washington, DC. The four-day educational event and trade show is designed to present the mailing industry’s most profitable ideas. It offers businessand career-building opportunities for every part of the mailing industry, from strategy and operations to marketing and technology.

The Forum is the only conference featuring a strategic briefing from Postal Service officers. Highlights include a keynote address by Postmaster General John E. Potter and general sessions at which USPS leaders discuss how mail can help companies grow their business and improve revenue.

For mail center managers and heads of production, symposiums and workshops cover a wide range of topics, including address quality, package shipping and mail security, and registrants can earn USPS certificates. Attendees also can see the newest and most innovative products and services, network with suppliers and explore state-of-the-art technology on exhibit.

And, after the NPF delivers on the business of mail, a reception will be held at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, which will be closed to the public for the event and allow exclusive access to the exhibits.

SCAN SUITS MAILERS PERFECTLY

The Postal Service’s Shipping Confirmation Acceptance Notice (SCAN) is a great fit for online entrepreneurs.

“There are still people skeptical about buying over the Internet,” says Robert Zaiger, president of New Era Factory Outlet, which sells clothing online and through a storefront in New York City’s fashion district. “The acceptance scan helps build trust in my company.”

When mailers go online to ship packages, using Click- N-Ship or other USPS-authorized PC Postage/label printing solutions, they can print a shipping notice that contains a barcode that’s linked to all packages in the shipment. “SCAN is making it easier for our customers to ship online and use Free Package Pickup,” says Jim Cochrane, manager of USPS Package Services.

“We’re bringing the acceptance event to the customer’s door — SCAN is a time-saver for our customers and for the Postal Service.”

SCAN allows shippers to manifest to just one SCAN form, and their customers can see the acceptance scan online.

“We send out a lot of packages both domestic and international,” says Nello Tropiano, president of Max Speed-Motor Sports, a Web-based auto parts business in Champlain, NY. “Having all the packages linked to one form when we drop them off really speeds things up and eliminates a lot of paperwork.”

SCAN is speedily becoming a popular option for shippers. Take it for a spin at usps.com.
