ASK DR. BARCODE

To Zebra Code, or Not to Zebra Code?

In the September/October Mailers Companion Dr. Barcode said that ECR high-density and/or saturation mailings entered at the letter rate must meet automation standards. That means everything related to automation standards, including barcoded tray labels with zebra codes. It doesn't happen often but, after further review, the good doctor was incorrect.

DMM M032.2.3 states in part that "the zebra code is a series of diagonal or vertical marks to the right of the barcode that serves as a visual indication that a tray contains automation rate mail." Therefore, only automation rate ECR letters (DMM 640.2.0) are required to contain a zebra code on the tray label. ECR basic (LOT), high density, and saturation letters are automation-compatible mail (that is, not mailed at an automation rate) and are not required to bear a zebra code on the tray label.

via e-mail to drbar@usps.gov or fax to 202-268-4954. The good doctor will select one or two of the most challenging questions for publication
