Pacific Coast Rain Forest
The Pacific Coast Rain Forest stamp pane is the second in the Nature of America educational series promoting appreciation of North America's major plant and animal communities. The first in this series was the Sonoran Desert pane issued in 1999. The rain forest of the Pacific Northwest is one of the largest remaining temperate rain forests in the world and is considered by some to be the most spectacular. This is an old-growth forest, with giant trees hundreds of years old. The understory of the rain forest is especially lush.
Painted by John Dawson, the stamp art
includes 26 animal and plant species, highlighting the diversity of life in the
coastal temperate rain forest. The scene includes an aquatic component because
streams, rivers and the life they support are critical parts of this
ecosystem.
