Turning Research and
Development into Reality
Most of what we call research and development consists of testing
the new products and technologies, as well as any modifications
to existing products and technology that our suppliers have developed.
Examples of projects for 2001 and beyond include one project involving
software development for the National Directory Support System,
which is the offline automation support for mail processing activities.
Another program is extending the development of a prototype flats
delivery sequencer into our operations. We are also supporting the
technology transfer of commercial robotics applications to our operations.
And we are exploring low-cost alternatives for providing customers
with convenient retail access to postal products and services.
We do conduct research and development in the field of optical character
recognition simply because this technology is so essential for us,
and we are the leader in the field. We have continued to improve
our Remote Bar Coding System that is specifically designed to bar code
mail not already bar coded, and which existing Optical Character
Reading equipment cannot bar code. We have also continued to improve
the technology we use to recognize handwritten addresses. Our research
and development efforts focus on increasing our efficiency and improving
customer service.

On a percentage basis,
it is clear that mail
volume has increased
dramatically while
the percentage of
workers has not.
