  • We're an environmental leader. Because of our size, we can and do make a big difference.
  • We're leaders in alternative fuel. Flex-Fuel. Electric. Hybrid electric. Our 43,000-vehicle alternative-fuel capable fleet is the nation's largest. We're now testing three-wheel electric vehicles and a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that produces zero emissions.
  • We keep delivery efficient. We're constantly streamlining our routes. And we deliver by vehicle, bike, and on foot. In fact, our “fleet of feet” delivers mail by walking almost 10,000 delivery routes every day.
  • We reduce and recycle. We recycle more than 200,000 tons of paper, cardboard, cans and plastics each year. And our secure recycling bins in many Post Office lobbies make it easy for customers to be environmentally friendly.
  • We're bringing you greener choices. We're using mail to help clean up the environment. Our mail-back program lets consumers mail ink cartridges and small used electronics, liks PDAs and cell phones, so they can be disposed of properly and recycled.

our environmental efforts

We are committed to leaving a “green” footprint across America. The Postal Service has a long history of environmental stewardship. We are pioneers in using alternative fuel-capable vehicles. And we support recycling and offer eco-friendly products.

We’re working with customers to reduce mail that’s undeliverable, and working with other delivery companies to move mail and packages on shared transportation — reducing fuel, energy and costs.

We’re helping empower the American people to go green!

did you know…

We're building new postal facilities with the environment in mind. We use recycled fiberglass, natural lighting, thermal windows and solar electric and thermal systems. And water tanks to harvest rainwater.

We’re also greening our existing facilities. And we have one of the nation’s largest green roofs.
