Williamson Post Office Adjusts Hours

USPS Offers Alternative Service Access

WILLIAMSON, WV — Over the past few years, the Postal Service has introduced several alternative ways for customers to conduct postal business in addition to going to their local Post Office. Because USPS offers additional customer options — combined with the nation’s continuing economic crunch — select Post Offices will be changing their business hours.

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 7, the retail window at the Williamson Post Office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. There will be no change in mail delivery however,” said Williamson Postmaster John Masters.

Oil price increases, weak retail sales, the tightening of the credit markets and the demise of financial institutions are continuing to have a negative effect on the economy, according to Postmaster General Jack Potter. These factors, combined with the shift of transactions and messages from the mail to electronic communications, have resulted in a mail volume decline of more than 9 billion pieces of mail over the last fiscal year.

The Postal Service is the second largest employer in the nation and operates the largest civilian vehicle fleet in the world with more than 219,000 vehicles. Last year, USPS spent about $1.7 billion on fuel. This year, it will spend $2.3 billion.

Besides going to the Post Office, USPS has several ‘quick, easy and convenient’ ways for customers to buy stamps online at usps.com, by phone, by fax and by filling out a Stamp by Mail order form available from carriers. Customers can print package labels, pay for postage and request Carrier Pickup by logging on to usps.com. Stamps and other services also are available from rural carriers, if customers are on a rural delivery route.

“We are trying to find creative ways to offer service but stay within our budget,” said Masters. “This is a transitional time for us. However, we will continue to provide the same excellent service for our customers.”

For customer convenience, the nearby Chattaroy Post Office is open 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday though Friday, and 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
