Letter Carriers Honored in Berkeley Springs

Post Office Inducts Three Into Million Mile Club

BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV — They could have driven to California and back more than 200 times —each. Instead, three Berkeley Springs Letter Carriers opted to deliver mail for 30-plus years.

As a result, Jim Buzzerd, Karen Henry and Darlene Abe have become the latest members of the National Safety Council’s Million Mile Club: an honor reserved for employees driving one million miles — or 30 years — without an at-fault accident.

The carriers will be recognized for their accomplishments by Appalachian District Manager Karen Schenck Wednesday, April 2, 8:30 a.m. at the Berkeley Springs Post Office, 417 N. Washington St.

“This is the first time our office has had three carriers honored for the same achievement at the same time,” said Postmaster Ron Davis. “Driving more than 1 million miles without a preventable accident is a huge accomplishment. We’re proud of Darlene, Karen and Jim for showing such dedication to their jobs and their customers.”

Schenk will be joined by Davis and Post Office Operations Manager Patty Jessee in presenting certificates, plaques and jackets to these distinguished individuals.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
