Postal Service announces Clarkston route changes

CLARKSTON — Clarkston, WA, residents will still get the same great daily mail service, but for some, it may be at a different time or delivered by a different carrier.

In response to changing mail volumes and technology advances, the Postal Service will be making adjustments to some individual carrier routes in Clarkston.

“We’ll be serving the same territory, but with fewer carrier routes,” said Postmaster Scott Dahl. “While we try to minimize customer inconvenience, it’s inevitable that some addresses will be delivered at a different time than they’ve grown accustomed.”

The route adjustments are fueled by an unprecedented drop in mail volume — more than 9 billion fewer pieces will be delivered this year compared to last. Additionally, technological innovations have automated much of the letter and flat sorting that used to be done manually.

”We need to be responsible and efficient and these changes will streamline our operation,” said Dahl. “The end result will be a smoother operation and will help keep postage costs as low as possible.”

For those that need early mail delivery, the office has Post Office boxes for rent starting as inexpensively as $22 per six month period.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
