Cape Charles Post Office Hosts Community Health Fair

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Displays, Blood Pressure Checks and More

CAPE CHARLES, VA —When Cape Charles Postmaster Coretta Alston asked the Susan B. Komen Tidewater Affiliate to participate in her Breast Cancer Awareness Month event, she did not realize it would morph into a health fair for the community.

Eastern Shore residents are invited to drop by the Cape Charles Post Office, 299 Randolph Avenue, on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  In addition to a Komen Tidewater Affiliate representative providing informational displays and is a breast cancer survivor, there will be health tips provided by Blue Cross/Blue Shield, information on the National Marrow Donor Program, and free blood pressure checks.

Postmaster Alston will also be selling Breast Cancer Research stamps, the first semipostal stamp in U.S. history.  Since being issued on July 29, 1998, over 835.2 million stamps have been sold, generating $63.9 million in funds from the American public to assist in finding a cure for breast cancer.  Congress legislated that the difference between the price of the stamp and the First-Class Mail rate be directed to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DOD) Medical Research Program.

“I hope our customers will take a few minutes from their day to get a blood pressure check, pick up some important health tips for themselves or a friend, and purchase Breast Cancer Research stamps,” said Alston.  “Few things reach as many Americans each day as the U.S. Mail, and postage stamps provide an opportunity to raise money and awareness in support of important social issues.”

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
