New Postal Service Mail Processing Center Moves Forward

Initial stages of the project have begun to unfold

WHO:
The United States Postal Service, the Korte Construction Company and the URS Corporation.

WHEN:
Friday, August 22, 2008 at 1:00 pm

WHERE:
5801 Technology Boulevard, Sandston, VA 23150

WHAT:
Local media are invited to attend a Media Day at the location of the new Richmond Processing and Distribution Center.  The site has been cleared and is currently being prepped for construction of a 715,743 square foot facility.  Postal officials and construction officials will be available to answer questions, explain blueprints and provide a tour/photo opportunity of the site.  A light lunch will be provided.  PLEASE NOTE: for safety’s sake, visitors are asked to wear slip resistant, closed-toe shoes or boots (no heels or sandals).  While on site, you will also be required to wear safety helmets and vests (provided at the site).

NOTES:
On May 7, 2008 the Board of Governors granted final approval of the funds for a new Richmond Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC).  The P&DC will consolidate mail-processing operations now being performed at four separate locations around the city.  This is an exciting opportunity for Central Virginia to have one of the most modern facilities in the nation, as precious few dollars are available for such projects.  “The new center will be great for our employees, customers and the community,” said Activation Coordinator Natasha Wilson.  “We look forward to providing continued exceptional customer service.”

Since 1990, the Postal Service has contracted with IBM Global Business Services to measure First-Class Mail service performance independently and objectively.  The current Richmond P&DC reported their best service scores ever with a 97.74 percent on-time delivery rate of overnight mail for quarter three (April thru June).

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
