Local Post Offices Announce Their 2007 Federal Tax Filing Deadline Operations

Last minute federal tax filers have just a few days left before the Tuesday, April 15, 2008, federal tax filing deadline.  This year, all post offices in central Virginia will observe normal retail service hours on April 15.  However, the Richmond Main Post Office on Brook Road will be collecting mail until midnight to ensure last minute federal tax filers receive the April 15 postmark on their returns.  The following information lists post offices with late retail lobby operations. 

Mailers are strongly advised to check the last pickup time posted on blue collection boxes before depositing their returns as there will be no special collection of mail from these boxes.  An April 15 postmark will be provided if the mail is deposited by the last pickup time posted.  Also, mailers using an Automated Postal Center (APC), or self-service kiosks, should be aware that APCs do not provide “proof of mailing” as the date of sale on the receipt does not necessarily represent the mailing date.   

Richmond - Richmond Main Post Office, 1801 Brook Rd. – 6 p.m.
Town Center Post Office, 1121 Mall Dr. – 6 p.m.
Ridge Post Office, 10509 Patterson Ave. – 5:30 p.m.

Glen Allen  - Glen Allen Post Office, 4990 Sadler Pl. – 6:30 p.m.   

Richmond Processing and Distribution Center, 1801 Brook Rd.  Postal employees will be collecting mail until midnight for an April 15 postmark.

Customers are encouraged to mail their tax returns as early in the day as possible and postal officials suggest customers weigh their returns or extension request on a postal scale to calculate the proper amount of postage. This is especially true if a customer is filing extra forms or schedules.  Tax agencies will NOT pay postage due, so short–paid filings will be returned to the sender for additional postage.  Customers mailing tax deadline packages weighing 16 ounces or more, and bearing postage in the form of postage stamps must mail these packages at a postal retail window. 

Per the IRS website (www.irs.gov ) …“Other than direct proof of actual delivery, a registered or certified mail receipt is the only prima facie evidence of delivery of a document to the agency or office with which the document is required to be filed.  No other evidence of a postmark or mailing will be prima facie evidence of delivery or raise a presumption that the document was delivered.”   .
