BACKGROUND:The Postal Customer Council © (PCC©) was introduced in 1961 to help improve communications between the Postal Service and its customers. The PCC network today represents some 200 groups and 120,000 members nationwide, including the Hampton Roads Postal Customer Council (HRPCC) which was established over 34 years ago. PCCs are community groups made up of business mailers and Postal Service leaders who work together to improve mail service, identify and correct problems, and exchange ideas to help member companies be more successful. Through regular meetings, educational programs, mailer clinics and seminars, PCC members learn about the latest postal products and services. While teaching a seminar at a recent National Postal Forum in Washington, D.C., HRPCC Industry Co-Chair Dr. Bruce Macdonald extended the invitation to Postmaster General Potter to speak to the local mail service community and general public. Named 72nd postmaster general of the United States of America on June 1, 2001, Jack Potter has led the Postal Service to record levels of service, efficiency, and financial performance. Potter's tenure has been marked by a focus on generating revenue, reducing costs, improving service, and achieving results with a customer-focused, performance-based culture. Potter joined the Postal Service as a clerk in New York in 1978. He holds a degree in economics from Fordham University; he is a Sloan Fellow and earned a master's degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has served as chief operating officer vice president of Labor Relations, and held a number of other senior operational positions both at postal headquarters and in the field. Potter serves on the Postal Service Board of Governors. He is also vice chairman of the International Post Corporation, an association of 23 national postal operators in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific; chairman of the Kahala Posts Group, an Asia-Pacific alliance that includes the United States, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea; and a member of the president's National Hire Veterans Committee. ###
-30- An independent federal agency, the Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses — six days a week and also has 37,000 retail locations. It relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. USPS has annual revenues of $73 billion and delivers more than 46 percent of the world's mail volume. --xxx-- | |
