Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis to be Honored
at Gloucester Post Office on June 30

GLOUCESTER, VA – A ceremony dedicating the Gloucester Post Office in honor of the former 1st District Congresswoman Jo Ann S. Davis will be held on Tuesday, June 30.

The public ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in the lobby of the Post Office located at 6892 Main Street. The program will include her husband, Chuck Davis, and U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman who authored the legislation that led to the name change for the Post Office building in Gloucester. Public Law 110-226, signed by President George Bush, officially authorized the rededication of the Gloucester Post Office as the “Congresswoman Jo Ann S. Davis Post Office Building.”

Others supporting the tribute will include local county officials and the U.S. Postal Service, Richmond District Manager, Jacob Cheeks.

A North Carolina native, Davis lived in Virginia since she was nine years old, graduating from Kecoughtan High School in Hampton. She attended Hampton Roads Business College and worked in real estate before being elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1997.

During her tenure, Congresswoman Davis served on the House Armed Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee. An ardent advocate for servicemembers, she supported legislation that strengthened the Armed Forces and improved benefits for uniformed personnel. Davis was co-chair and founding member of the Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus, and co-chair of the 2007 National Prayer Breakfast.

The public is invited to attend the dedication, which will include a table with memorabilia from Davis’ life.
