Winners Announced in Inaugural Cape Charles Christmas Parade and Scavenger Hunt

CAPE CHARLES, VA — The reality of Postmaster Coretta Alston’s idea to hold a holiday parade came to life last month when an estimated 200 children and adults lined Mason Avenue for the inaugural Cape Charles Christmas Parade.

Alston credits the parade committee, consisting of town employees, town council members, local businesses, postal employees and other volunteers, for the event’s success.  “There was a lot of work to do in a short period of time, and we made it happen,” said Alston.  In addition to photos with Santa before the parade, a scavenger hunt was held with prizes awarded in five age groups.

This overall parade winners were:  first place, Cape Charles Baptist Church; second place, Cheriton Cub Scout Pack 306; and third place, Bailey’s Bait & Tackle.  Each winning entry received a framed certificate.

Scavenger hunt winners were:  Ages 4-5, Louanne Lewis; Ages 6-8, Nicolas Thompson; Ages 9-11, Hannah DiMarino; Ages 12-14, Michelle Hughes, and Ages 15-18, Bria Smith.  The committee awarded an MP3 player to the Ages 15-18 group winner, while all other groups received bicycles.  The awards were presented in the lobby of the Cape Charles Post Office by Coretta Alston and Manager, Post Office Operations Eddie Archer.

Trina Veber was the parade announcer who read a short statement about each entry.  Committee members included Heather Arcos, Chris Bannon, Jeb Brady, Maryann Bryant, John Burdiss, Cela Burge, Marshall Cox, Pete Leontiess, Joan Natali, David Nottingham, Deborah Selby, and Tad Taborne.  Alston noted that Mayor Dora Sullivan, Town Manager Joe Vaccaro, and Police Chief David Eder were instrumental in the event’s success event by providing resources and guidance.
