Postal Service Announces ZIP Code Changes in Utah

ZIP Code Changes in West Jordan and Cedar City to Be Effective July 1

SALT LAKE CITY — The Postal Service is announcing a new ZIP Code in West Jordan, and changing ZIP Code boundaries in the Cedar City area effective July 1, 2008. The ZIP Code changes will affect 17,000 delivery addresses (see attached map). All customers affected received letters last week notifying them of the change.

“The tremendous growth in these areas made the ZIP Code changes necessary,” said USPS District Manager Ken McArthur. “It will improve mail processing efficiency and ensure our customers continue to receive the best possible mail service.”

The West Jordan Post Office will add a new ZIP Code, 84081, that will affect over 10,000 mailing addresses in ZIP Codes 84084 and 84088 in the West Jordan area. Any address west of 4800 West that is currently in the 84088 zip or 84084 ZIP Code will now be in ZIP Code 84081. Those affected will continue to have their mail delivered out of the West Jordan Post Office.

Residents in these areas are asked to start using their new ZIP Codes beginning July 1, 2008. They should ask their mailing correspondents to also start using the new ZIP Code beginning July 1.  There is a one-year grace period allowed in which mail addressed with the old ZIP Code will still be processed and delivered.

In Cedar City, postal customers who live north of 200 North will see their ZIP Code change from 84720 to 84721, which is the current ZIP Code for Cedar City’s Post Office boxes. The change will affect over 7,000 delivery addresses. Those affected will continue to have their mail delivered out of the Cedar City Post Office.

“We know that a new ZIP Code implementation can inconvenience some customers, but we will do our best to make this a smooth and easy transition,” said McArthur. “Our Business Service Network, Business Mail Units and Account Managers also work at notifying major business mailers, municipalities, banks, utility and credit card companies that ZIP Code changes have occurred.  The Postal Service will ensure delivery of our customer’s mail with the old ZIP Code for a period of one year.  That will give our customers time to notify correspondents of their new mailing address.”

In addition to the affected residents receiving letters notifying them of the change, delivery area maps for the new ZIP Codes will be posted in the West Jordan and Cedar City Post Offices.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
