Hurricane Gustav: Most Postal Service Operations Resume

USPS resumes full operations in most of Louisiana and all of Texas

SAN ANTONIO — The United States Postal Service (USPS) has resumed operations and deliveries throughout Louisiana in all areas that are accessible and safe for employees.

“The morning after Hurricane Gustav made landfall, we stand ready to meet our mandate to serve our customers,” says Southwest Area Vice President Ellis Burgoyne, “the interruption of service was brief, largely due to moving quickly to secure mail, postal facilities and equipment in advance of the arrival of Hurricane Gustav. Thankfully all our employees are accounted for and many are reporting to work today in impacted areas, ready to serve the public trust.”

Texas operations and deliveries are fully operational. Current status of operations in impacted areas, by state follows:

LOUISIANA

Plants and Post Offices in Louisiana (Zip Code Areas 705-714) are accepting mail and offering retail and delivery services.

Some plants and Post Offices in Southern Louisiana (Zip Codes for New Orleans Area 700-701, Zip Codes for Houma Area 703, and Zip Codes for Mandeville Area 704) are expected to resume operations on Wednesday, September 3, 2008. At that time, deliveries will resume at all accessible locations mindful of the safety of our employees, customers, and in accordance with local law enforcement instructions.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation, 146 million homes and businesses, six days a week. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
