Severo Garza To Be Installed As El Paso’s 34th Postmaster

August 19 Installation Event At UTEP

EL PASO, TEXAS —Severo Garza will be officially installed as El Paso’s 34th Postmaster, on Tuesday, August 19.  Garza, a native Texan, joins the distinguished list of El Paso Postmasters dating back 156 years, starting in 1852, when Jarvis Hubbell was appointed El Paso’s First Postmaster.

District Manager Manuel Arguello, of the Rio Grande District, which includes much of the State of Texas including El Paso, will administer the Oath of Office to Garza during a 10 a.m. ceremony in the El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center A, Bldg 20, 2151 Wiggins Street, on the University of Texas, El Paso campus.  The community is encouraged to attend the installation.  A public meet and greet session will immediately follow the ceremony, which ends at noon.

As El Paso’s Postmaster, Garza will have managerial responsibility and oversight for mail delivery in a city with over 264,388 possible deliveries, approximately 687 Postal Service employees, 14  El Paso Post Office Stations and 10 Contract Postal Units.   The El Paso Post Office generates over $151 million annually in total operating revenue.

A 19-year Postal Service veteran, Garza started his career in 1989 as a Rural Carrier Associate in Kenedy, TX.  He has served in increasingly responsible Postal Service management positions throughout Texas and Colorado, including Supervisor Customer Service in Beeville, TX, and in Floresville, TX; Officer-In-Charge for Post Offices in Falfurrias, Spring Branch, Elmendorf, Marion, Weslasco, Robstown, TX, and Boulder, CO; Postmaster for Port Aransas, Raymondville, TX, and Grand Junction, CO.

Serving a majority of his Postal career in the Lone Star State, Garza left his native Texas in 2003 to accept an assignment in the Postal Service’s Colorado/Wyoming District as the Manager of Post Office Operations. While in Colorado, Garza also served as an Operations Programs Analyst for the Postal Service’s Western Area Office.

During his career, Garza has been the recipient of many Postal Service awards and honors. He completed a Bachelors Degree in Accounting at the University of Texas, San Antonio.  He has three children, Severo Jr., Sierra, and Sabrina. Garza enjoys fishing and reading in his spare time.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
