Postal Service operations during Dolly

As Hurricane Dolly hits the coastal area, the U. S. Postal Service is providing full postal service operations everywhere possible, as flooding and road conditions permit.

According to the Manager of Post Office Operations, Mary Martinez, "The Postal Service places the safety of its employees as its top priority.  We are committed to delivering the mail today and are following the lead of local emergency officials to deliver to areas they deem safe.  Currently Brownsville and San Benito have suspended delivery as recommended by local officials due to hazardous road conditions, high winds and downed power lines."  The Los Fresnos and Lozano Post Offices have closed their retail lobbies due to a community wide power failure.  The South Padre Island Post Office remains closed.

Some offices may close lobbies as the hurricane approaches.  If roads become impassable or it is unsafe for travel, delivery services in other areas may not be available, and collection of mail from mailboxes may be suspended.  The situation will be reviewed on a continuing basis, and normal service will be resumed as soon as safely possible.  We regret any inconvenience to our customers.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
