Last year, Dallas District letter carriers collected more than 960,000 pounds with a goal this year to exceed 1 million pounds. Donations are then delivered to community food banks, pantries and shelters.

Jennifer Bartkowski, Sr. Vice-President, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas

WHEN:
Friday, May 9, 2008 @ 8:00 a.m. - Food Drive Kick-off Media Event

Where:
North Texas Food Bank
4500 S. Cockrell Hill Rd
Dallas TX  75236-2028

Background:
According to America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network, more than 35 million people are food insecure, hungry or at risk of hunger.  Approximately one in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child.  Letter carriers, the fiber woven throughout every community in the United States, head this community-wide event to help Stamp Out Hunger! with their 16th annual food drive. In Dallas this year, participants are asked to simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 10.  The local letter carriers will then collect donations from homes across the city and deliver them to the North Texas Food Bank.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
