Postal Letter Carriers Team Up With Major Sponsors To Stamp Out Hunger!

Nation's Largest Food Drive Celebrates Its 16th Anniversary While Helping Millions of Americans

WHAT:
On Saturday, May 10, Dallas letter carriers will again help Stamp Out Hunger! across America with your help.  Now in its 16th year, the Stamp Out Hunger! effort is the nation's largest single-day food drive, with letter carriers having collected more than 836 million pounds of food from postal customers since its inception. Last year, Dallas District letter carriers collected more than 960,000 pounds with a goal this year to exceed 1 million pounds. Donations are then delivered to community food banks, pantries and shelters.

Supporting the drive again this year with the U.S. Postal Service National Association of Letter Carriers are Campbell’s Soup, America's Second Harvest the Nation's Food Bank Network - North Texas Food Bank, Valpak - Cox Target Media, the AFL-CIO and United Way of America.

To help Stamp Out Hunger! in Dallas this year, participants simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 10.  The local letter carriers will then collect donations from homes across the city and deliver them to the North Texas Food Bank.

WHY:
According to America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network, more than 35 million people are food insecure, hungry or at risk of hunger.  Approximately one in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
