U.S. POSTAL SERVICE 'TAX NIGHT' OPERATIONS FOR APRIL 15, 2008
Midnight Collection Available For Last Minute Tax Filers

AMARILLO, TX — Tax day, Tuesday, April 15, is just around the corner and the U.S. Postal Service again wants to make tax day less taxing. Amarillo area residents will have until midnight to deposit their tax returns and receive an April 15 postmark at the Amarillo Main Post Office, located at 2301 Ross St. Tax returns can be deposited in the Main Post Office's outside collection boxes, the mail collection drops inside the Main Post Office lobby, or at the Automated Postal Center (if postage purchased there) in the Main Post Office's lobby.

The Amarillo Main Post Office will be the only post office in Amarillo to offer mail collections until midnight in order to receive the April 15, 2008 postmark.

Customers can call the postal customer line at 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) to find their nearest April 15 late tax mail collection site, obtain specific information on postage rates or get other Postal Service information.

Below are important tax return mailing tips:
• Apply proper postage and stamps, especially if you have extra forms/schedules. It costs 41 cents for the first ounce; 17 cents for each additional ounce. One ounce is about four pages. Oversized envelopes also require additional postage. Call our postal customer line at 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) or visit our website at www.usps.com to obtain specific rate information if you are mailing large tax return envelopes or packages.
• All last minute stamped tax returns weighing over 13 ounces need to be handed directly to a Postal Service clerk on duty and not deposited directly in a collection box or these will be returned to sender.
• The IRS does not accept postage due mail, all mail with insufficient postage will be returned to sender.
• If you use a non-IRS labeled envelope, make sure you print the proper IRS address.
• Print your return address in the upper-left-hand corner of your tax mail envelope.
• Customers who wish to have certification that their tax mail form is received by IRS, should mail it using Certified Mail Service/Return Receipt - available at your local post office.
• While postal customers are encouraged to mail before April 15; if you do wait until Tax Day; be sure to mail your tax return at a designated postal location that offers late tax mail pick-up.
• Customers with tax questions can contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040; or www.irs.gov

It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
