Postmaster Turner recommends customers apply for their passports at least two months or earlier before their departure to avoid any extra costs involved in expediting your application.

For expedited service, add $60 for each application, payable to the State Department. Two-way overnight delivery is strongly encouraged. In such cases, the applicant incurs overnight
(Express Mail) delivery costs, payable to USPS.

Information on the cost and how to apply for a passport book and/or passport card can be found at www.usps.com/passport/ or travel.state.gov. U.S. citizens may also obtain passport information by phone, in English or Spanish, by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1-877-487-2778.

In 2008, the Postal Service accepted 8.5 million passport applications.
