Make Tax Night — Tueday April 15th — Less Taxing

NASHVILLE – If you’ve waited until the last minute, there's still time to get your IRS tax returns in the mail, thanks to designated late-night mail collection locations offered by the United States Postal Service. The Postal Service encourages the public to mail their Federal Internal Revenue Service tax returns before the Tuesday, April 15th midnight deadline*  to avoid the last minute rush to the Post Office.

“We expect things to get interesting around the middle of the afternoon,” said Dave Vale,  Postmaster, Nashville.  All mail deposited before midnight at the blue mail collection boxes, in front of any Post Office having the Nashville 372 ZIP Code prefix will receive the April 15th postmark required by the IRS.  However, the Post Office cautions taxpayers to check the posted pick-up schedule if they elect to use a street side collection box to ensure their tax documents will be collected and postmarked before the deadline.

As in the past, the Postal Service will have workers on hand to collect tax returns.  We will have personnel outside the Main Post Office, located at 525 Royal Parkway, Nashville, TN from 6:00 p.m. until midnight to assist last minute mailers.  The retail office at this location is open from 6:00 a.m. until midnight Monday through Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

To further assist taxpayers, the Postal Service suggests the following tax time mailing tips:

  • Make sure you have the proper postage, especially if you have extra forms or schedules.  The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will not accept returns without postage or with insufficient postage.  The postage for the first ounce is 41 cents and 17 cents for each additional ounce.
  • If you use a non-IRS labeled envelope, make sure you have the proper IRS address.  Also, put your return address in the upper left-hand corner.

Even though the mail will be heavy on “tax night” this year, we want to assure the community that every tax filing will receive an official April 15th postmark if it is properly prepared for mailing by the designated midnight cutoff time.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
