Mail Service Halted in Rapid City and Western South Dakota

Blizzard Conditions Shut Down Delivery in Much of State

SIOUX FALLS, SD — A major spring snowstorm has shut down mail delivery to Rapid City as well as western parts of South Dakota.

Mail delivery has been halted for the day in Rapid City due to heavy snow and high winds that have made many streets impassable. In some instances local law enforcement has ordered carriers off the street as a safety precaution.

Carriers are attempting delivery where possible throughout the 577 ZIP Code area, with sporadic service today because of closed roads and deteriorating conditions.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
