White Stone Post Office Celebrates 100 Years

Special Centennial Postmark To Be Offered Nationwide

Postmaster Margie Moore will welcome the community to a special historic centennial celebration of the founding of the White Stone Post Office on Saturday, October 18, 2008. The event will take place at noon at the White Stone Post Office, 3430 Southport Rd. 

Featured speakers will include SC Representative, Lanny Littlejohn, district 33, Steve Lenoir, Past National President of the League of Postmasters, and Cowpens Mayor, John Morrow, who will serve as the master of ceremonies. 

White Stone postmarkLocal National Guardsman, Sgt. Troy Farr, recently returned from his third tour of duty in a war zone at Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan, will lead the Spartanburg High School AROTC color guard in a flag-raising ceremony.  Farr will present a flag flown over Camp Phoenix to the Post Office.  Postmaster Moore will perform the National Anthem.

Local historian Jeannette Moore will present historic perspective remarks.  Collections of historic materials will be on display.  A patriotic musical presentation will be made by Ronald and Wayne Moore. 

The establishment date for the office is October 23, 1908.  Moore is the 11th Postmaster in 100 years.  “Not many organizations are around for 100 years and continue to serve their customers,” said Moore.  “We’re celebrating that, but it’s also a great opportunity to say thank you to them as well.”

The postmark is free, but must be applied to items bearing First-Class postage.  It will be available to collectors at the post office on Saturday, or through the mail for 30 days following the date of issue (Nov. 18).
