Radio Station WMHK 89.7FM Plans Visit to “Express” Appreciation for Columbia’s Downtown Letter Carriers

On-Air Personality, Mike Weston to Talk to Carriers and Clerks from 3 ZIPs

On-air personality, Mike Weston and employees of Columbia’s Christian family radio station, WMHK 89.7FM, will visit Columbia’s Main Post Office on Tuesday, July 29 at 9 a.m. to say “thank you” and pass out “goodie bags” to Clerks and Letter Carriers.

The purpose?  According to Weston and the station’s director of marketing and outreach, Glenn Towery, to express appreciation to a group that may well be taken for granted on a day-to-day basis.  “My understanding,” said Weston, “is that a mail carrier walks 19,000 steps—over 7 miles—and delivers more than 2,300 pieces of mail on an average day.  And in the summer in Columbia, they’re doing this in temperatures well over 90 degrees.  We just want to acknowledge the importance of their service and say thanks.”  The bags include drinks and treats.

Columbia’s Main Post Office is a carrier station that houses the 75 City Carriers, 5 Rural Carriers and 13 Distribution Clerks that serve ZIP Codes 29201, 29203 and 29205.  These employees serve 42,660 possible deliveries in three of Columbia’s 11 stations and branches.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
